HALLWAY CLOSET RENOVATION
Budget: $500 | Timeline: 12 working days
This old closet got an upgrade
To start we removed the old shelving which was basically painted in place.
Once all the shelving was removed, we took out the floor too.
Down to the original sub flooring. We did this as it would be easier to remove when the shelves aren't in place. We covered with particle board until were ready to install the flooring for the whole house
We patched, sanded and painted the side walls. The original back wall was very uneven and in order to add aromatic cedar we needed a smooth flat surface.
We once again used a laser to keep our lines level and straight.
Then started adding cedar boards, one at a time.
The entire back wall is covered in aromatic cedar which smells wonderful.
Next we built the shelves out of 2" poplar and 1/2" birch ply. We tested the weight to 120lbs
3 full width shelves, 20" deep with an additional two smaller shelves to the left of the door. Once the floor is put it, we'll add a final two smaller shelves to the bottom right.
The return shelves are seamless
The front of the shelves are covered in solid birch, stained to match the wood in our bathroom. Once stained they are protected with a satin polycrylic
The birch is glued to the shelf and left to dry.
Each shelf is covered with cork. The 1/16" cork aligns evenly with the birch face.
The original closet door was sanded and painted. We switched the original knob and hinges with matte black to match the updated bathroom.
Added hooks to the inside of the door to hold easy access items - the dogs leashes and vests.
6" - Matte black to match
Seamless corner shelves with birch and cork in place
The cork feels very refined but in actuality we used it cover the birch plywood seams. We cut the shelves to fit exact but had to cut them in half as wee couldnt fit them into the closet!
